Introduction: My U.S. Visa Journey

Applying for a U.S. visa can seem daunting, especially if it’s your first time. I remember my own experience when I applied for a B1/B2 visa in Haiti in 2017. Initially, I found the process difficult, but after reading numerous articles and gathering confidence, I finally took the plunge and applied. Fortunately, I was approved of a 10-year multiple-entry!

Having a U.S. visa is not just about visiting the United States; it opens doors to many other countries, especially in Central and South America. If you’re interested, check out my blog post about countries you can visit with a U.S. visa as a Philippine passport holder.

With that in mind, let’s dive into the step-by-step process of applying for a U.S. visa in the Philippines.

Step 1: Determine the Type of U.S. Visa You Need

Before starting your application, determine the appropriate visa type based on your travel purpose:

  • Tourism (B-2 Visa) – For leisure, vacation, or medical treatment.

  • Business (B-1 Visa) – For meetings, conferences, or negotiations.

  • Student (F-1 Visa) – For those planning to study in the U.S.

  • Work Visas (H-1B, L-1, etc.) – For employment opportunities.

  • Exchange Visitor Visa (J-1 Visa) – For cultural exchange programs.

For a full list of visa categories, visit the U.S. Embassy Manila’s official site: ph.usembassy.gov/visas

Step 2: Complete the DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application

The DS-160 form is the official application form required for all nonimmigrant U.S. visas.

  1. Visit the Official DS-160 Portal: ceac.state.gov

  2. Select “Philippines, Manila” as your application location.

  3. Fill Out the Form Completely: Provide personal details, travel plans, and background information.

  4. Upload a Passport Photo: A 2x2-inch photo with a white background is required.

  5. Submit the Form & Print the Confirmation Page: Save the DS-160 confirmation page, which contains a barcode.

Step 3: Pay the U.S. Visa Application Fee

The non-refundable visa application fee is $185 (subject to change). You can pay via:

  • Bank Over-the-Counter Payment: Visit a Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) branch.

  • Online Banking (PesoNet or BPI Online): If you have an account with BPI, you can pay online.

Obtain your receipt and ensure it has a reference number, which you will need to book your visa appointment.

Step 4: Schedule Your Visa Interview Appointment

After payment, schedule your visa interview through the official appointment portal:

  • U.S. Visa Information and Appointment Services: ustraveldocs.com/ph

  • Create an Account on the appointment website.

  • Enter Required Information, including:

    • DS-160 Confirmation Number

    • Visa Fee Receipt Number

    • Passport Number

  • Select Your Appointment Date & Time: Availability varies, so schedule early.

  • Print Your Appointment Confirmation Page: Bring this to the U.S. Embassy in Manila.

Step 5: Gather Required Documents for the Interview

Prepare the following documents for your visa interview:

    • Financial documents (bank statements, income tax return, etc.)

    • Travel itinerary (flight and hotel reservations, if available)

    • For students: Form I-20 from the U.S. school

Step 6: Attend Your U.S. Visa Interview

  1. Arrive Early at the U.S. Embassy in Manila

Step 7: After the Interview – Visa Processing & Delivery

Final Tips for a Successful U.S. Visa Application

  • Be Honest & Consistent: Provide accurate and truthful information in your application and interview.

  • Dress Professionally: First impressions matter.

  • Demonstrate Strong Ties to the Philippines: Show proof that you have a reason to return after your trip.

  • Prepare Supporting Documents: Bring all necessary documents to support your application.

  • Apply Early: Visa appointments can be booked months in advance.

One of the most important tips I can share is to prove that you are visiting the U.S. for tourism purposes only. To increase your chances of approval, it helps to have a travel history with visas from other countries on your passport. Before applying for my U.S. visa, I had already visited multiple countries, which I believe played a key role in my approval.
